World Environment Day is held each year on June the 5th where the United Nations (UN) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. At Positive Luxury we are confident we have a strong community of empowered and thoughtful brands, for this special day we have asked some of them to share more about the actions they are undertaking to protect our environment.
Mateja Benedetti, Founder of Benedetti Life
“Benedetti Life an animal free and sustainable fashion label, spread awareness of endangered species featured on new designs for spring summer 2021 and made it slow fashion.
On the other side we collaborate with a world-class goalkeeper and ambassador of “Play with us” foundation Jan Oblak to highlight some of the most intelligent species in the world, an octopus. Together we launched a sustainable and animal free collection.”
Tessa Gerlach, Founder of Elephant Gin
“Elephant Gin is trying to do its part to make the world a better place. The topic of sustainability and social responsibility is reflected in all facets of the company and production efforts. We continuously try to improve our processes to produce Elephant Gin in the most economic and environmentally friendly way possible.
Examples include: sourcing recyclable and sustainable materials, selecting suppliers that align with our social values and actively avoiding the use of plastic.”
Larada Lamsam, Founder of Washed Ashore
“As a jewellery brand, Washed Ashore‘s main focus has always been to use recycled precious metals and post-consumer gemstones in our collections. The gold mining industry is one of the most destructive industries in the world. Mining destroys entire ecosystems and its inhabitants. By using recycled gold and silver, and post-consumer gemstones, we are eliminating the need for newly mined materials. We hope to continue to educate our consumers on this very important topic through our collections.”
The team at Rusticae
“We in Rusticae are encouraging another way of travel, consciously, a sustainable tourism which respects the environment. Also we promote active tourism, which contributes to maintain the planet in a good health and we encourage working from home if circumstances permit, in order to limit the negative consequences of daily commute.”
Lisa Franklin, Founder of Lisa Franklin
“We are proud to share that we use ‘Green Technology’ to create our skincare products. Most of the plant based ingredients in the Lisa Franklin range have been cultivated using Biotech – Green Technology & Plant Cell Culture, which is beyond organic. Biotech is a creative, sustainable innovation to cultivate plant cells through eco-designed production methods of extracting stem cells to formulate our skincare products.
Because only a small amount of plant material is needed to produce large quantities of the molecules of interest this technology provides the most sustainable way to access rare, endangered and slow growing plants with absolute reproducibility, quality and availability assured.”
Sarah Rotheram, CEO of Miller Harris
“As a luxury brand, we at Miller Harris believe it is our responsibility to minimise our impact on the planet, preserving it for future generations. As a small step towards a more sustainable world, we’ve partnered with One Tree Planted; an environmental charity working to plant more trees globally. Every Miller Harris purchase on our website and in our stores (prior to closure due to Covid-19) results in one tree being planted, helping to fulfil the charities mission of global reforestation to beat climate change.”
Jacqueline Lopez, CEO and Founder of Jaline Resort
“During this time we have been working on sharing about sustainable consumption, buying handwoven which minimises the carbon footprint, empowering women artisans, being transparent and keeping production local. A sustainable lifestyle minimises ecological impacts while enabling these families to flourish and grow. With Jaline Resort, we have always designed two collections a year and are very happy to hear that this may be a norm going forward, I never believed in over production as it leads to waste.”
Tanith Swinford, Creative Director of Jota-Kena
“At Jota-Kena, we protect the environment on a daily basis, we go the reusable route wherever possible: be it using sustainable tote bags for shopping, bamboo straws for smoothies or reusable e-coffee cups. The accumulative effects of these seemingly ‘small’ actions truly make a difference. A few years ago we calculated that by simply using our e-coffee cups, we save an average of 520 conventional paper coffee cups between the two of us, per year.”
Nancy Liu, CEO of Forevermark
“Forevermark as part of De Beers Group is proud of our enduring commitment to protecting the natural world.
Our passion for diamonds is matched by our deep sense of connection with the Earth from which they come, that is why, for every hectare of land used for recovering diamonds, six hectares are dedicated to support biodiversity, conservation and building thriving ecosystems along The Diamond Route. Every day, let’s work together towards a diverse, natural and beautiful tomorrow.”
Claire Hattersley, Garden Development Manager, Weleda UK
“At Weleda UK we’re the proud custodians of 13 acres of beautiful biodiversity in Derbyshire. The garden has evolved over 35 years into a wildlife haven, where we grow our herbal crops. Weleda’s ethos to always work in harmony with nature is clearly demonstrated by the thriving habitats teeming with life. From the soil organisms fed by the homemade compost, the 23 different species of butterflies that flutter throughout the site, to the jays, owls, woodpeckers and kestrels nesting on site… this garden is most definitely alive.”
Bav Tailor, Founder of Bav Tailor
Through proceeds of each sale, Bav Tailor pledges to support humanitarian and environmental projects globally such as being a member of The Big Blue Ocean Clean Up and supporting Water.org and Save Elephant Foundation.
We have just recently formed a partnership with Treedom to plant trees globally to help support local farmers, bring social and financial benefits to their communities whilst implementing positive steps towards creating environmental balance.
Melita Hunter, Co-Founder of Song Saa
“Our Song Saa Foundation team members created an innovative Coastal and Reef Restoration Project – supporting our in-house artificial reef, seagrass mapping, mangrove restoration, and coastal clean-ups. Protecting nature is one of our core values for Song Saa and we are actively responding to it needs. Today is the World Environment Day and let us all work together to make the world a better place.”
The team at KAPLAN MD
“At KAPLAN MD, we value our commitment to sustainability and use our position as a leading brand to inspire people, partners, and customers to respect our planet while minimising our environmental impact. All of our products are cruelty-free, BPA free, fully recyclable, and made in LA to ensure our materials do not have a harmful impact on the local ecosystem or communities.:
Virginia Stone, Founder of Virginia Stone
“As a forward-thinking sustainable luxury brand, nature is at the core of our design, production, and purpose. We formulate with non-gmo raw materials supplied by women’s cooperatives and small-scale organic farmers. Our award-winning plastic-free packaging is crafted by hand using recycled materials, limited resources, and it is fully reusable and recyclable. I am an Ambassador for the Blue Ocean Project and we have partnered with One Tree Planted, and donate a portion of every sale to reforestation and environmental efforts.”
Noor Fares, Founder of Noor Fares
“I am very mindful of using plastic. Whenever possible, at home, I replace plastic items with biodegradable materials. I avoid plastic toys for my son. In situations where plastic is not avoidable, I choose recycled or used plastic instead. If everyone makes a small effort to reduce their use of plastic, we would go a long way.
During the lockdown, I started a vegetable and herbs garden. It has been a great learning experience, and a meditative process. Gardening is now part of my daily ritual.
Planting seeds is a great way of expressing our respect to the environment, it is even possible to do it on a windowsill in an apartment in a city.
Caring for the environment is about introducing new habits into our daily rhythm.”
Dr Mariano Spiezia, Founder of Inlight Beauty
“We have all well learned that when we protect nature, nature protects us. Nature is essential to our life, in fact our life belongs to nature. Protecting nature is not just about planting trees once, but about making changes at both macro and micro level. We can all do this. My contribution to protect nature is encouraging people to go sustainable and organic in everything they choose, from food, to mobility, even finances and social choices.
For Inlight Beauty I have chosen only 100% organic ingredients in my products for all these reasons mindful they protect your health and nature sustaining organic farming, protecting biodiversity, respecting natural cycles and ultimately boosting nature’s so depleted immune system.”
