Over the last three decades McQueens Flowers has become one of the most sought-after florists in the world. For the past 25 years they have provided suitably sensational displays for the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party, a demanding assignment that has, over the years, moved with the times from opulence to responsibility and sustainability.

In London, McQueens Flowers are the floral design partner for the All England Lawn Tennis Club Wimbledon Championships Ball and the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. McQueens Flowers displays grace some of the finest hotels and restaurants in the world, including the renowned Claridge’s and Peninsula Hotel in New York.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

In line with their mission to be “the best flower business in the world to work for,” McQueens Flowers has a number of policies in place, including paying a local living wage in every city they work in. They also report on their performance in terms of the gender pay gap, and are committed to closing it within their business by April 2021.McQueens Flowers also distributes a portion of their profits to all of their employees who have worked at the company for at least six months, along with enhancing their skills through their Flower School Tutor Training programme.For new parents within their company, McQueens Flowers offers full pay to both primary and secondary parents, and they are planning to introduce more flexible working for parents by April of 2020.

WASTE AND CO2 REDUCTION

McQueens Flowers has an overall mission to reduce waste, responsibly consume energy and to eliminate the use of unsustainable materials. All of the electricity they use comes from renewable sources and they are planning to replace their fleet with low or zero emission vehicles by April of 2021. Because a lot of tropical and out-of-season florals are now being grown in Europe, accessing those flowers will help McQueens Flowers reduce their carbon footprint, as well. McQueens Flowers also plans to reduce their use of floral foam by 50 percent by April of 2021, and they are constantly engaged with foam manufacturers to support innovation so they can produce a compostable alternative to the foam.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Through a variety of training programs and opportunities, McQueens Flowers supports the local communities in which they run their business. They are working towards providing even more employment opportunities for local young people by April of 2020, and four full-fee bursaries each year to young people living in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets so they can join the Flower School’s four-week course.McQueens Flowers also donated part of their Chelsea Flower Show installation to The Cambridge University Botanic Gardens so all of their visitors can learn more about the role of bees in growing plants. In addition to this, McQueens Flowers works with the British Beekeepers Association to raise awareness at a government level and protect the honeybee.

CONSCIOUS SOURCING, DESIGN AND DELIVERY

McQueens Flowers works directly with their suppliers and stays on top of any issues they might have by helping them develop an action plan. They only work with suppliers who share their same standards of ethics and sustainability. All of their suppliers sign a variety of flower industry-specific codes of conduct, they are members of the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative, and they sign up to McQueens Flowers own policies. When it comes to floral design, McQueens Flowers gives customers the option to receive their arrangements without floral foam, and they have introduced a gardening division so customers can create longer-lasting designs. They also redesigned their packaging and ensured that their flower bags are 100 percent biodegradable. They have also reduced their consumption of cellophane by 80 percent, and introduced a biodegradable alternative, Nativia. Lastly, McQueens Flowers switched to recyclable cardboard boxes rather than plastic crates for the transport of their retail orders, and they combine orders to maximise efficiency.
