Gabriela Hearst is a Uruguayan women’s luxury ready-to-wear and accessories designer. In addition to designing her namesake collection, she runs and operates her family’s ranch in Uruguay.
Gabriela honoured her family’s heritage through the launch of her eponymous label in Fall 2015, after taking over the operations of her father’s ranch in Uruguay. She wanted to create a brand that reflects a slower pace and process: where things are made with care and detail, where tradition is more important than trend, with a purpose to every piece
Gabriela’s commitment is to make a strong and modern collection without compromising her ethics and key values. Driving the brand’s sustainability strategy herself and taking into consideration where materials come from and who is making them: her designs are the epitome of luxury with a conscience or, in other words, ‘honest luxury’.Using the sheep from Gabriela’s farm to produce fabric, this is in turn used in their collection for suiting, while they upcycle fabrics in every single collection they produce.
Hearst’s actions on plastic extend across her personal, business and civic responsibilities. On Earth day 2018, Gabriela committed to making the business plastic free within the year. To do this, the brand adopted TIPA packaging and are credited as the the first company to have all packaging using TIPA’s innovative products. TIPA packaging will decompose within 180 days in compost conditions. – returning to nature with no harmful impact on the environment. Within the year the brand replaced all plastic hangers for luxurious but biodegradable cardboard ones.

The designer encourages her staff to volunteer, while as a business supporting community charities in the markets they operate in. Gabriela Hearst takes philanthropy seriously; in 2016, a collaboration with TOD’S on a limited edition “Love” shoe in support of Save the Children. The following summer, Hearst traveled to Turkana, Kenya where a looming hunger crisis was devastating the region. She pledged to donate $600,000 in support of Save the Children’s famine relief efforts by partnering with NET-A-PORTER and Bergdorf Goodman to make her handbag collection available to the public for the first time. Gabriela was recognised for these actions by being appointed to the board of trustees of Save the Children in September 2018.
Gabriela Hearst opened its flagship store at the Carlyle House, on Madison Avenue, in November 2018. Built consciously, without synthetics or chemicals; the in-store experience showcases the brands quality, care and commitment to the planet.
