Smiling Rocks is a lab grown diamond and jewellery brand based in New York, pioneering in fine and bridal jewellery. We sat down with the CEO and founder, Zulu Ghevriya, to learn more about his leadership style and to get advice for aspiring sustainability leaders.
What makes a great – or successful – leader?
A leader is a person who is both passionate and inspiring to his or her team, and a strong believer in the vision designed for the long-run. A leader is also a person who keeps the flame burning within themselves and is an example for team members to work towards the goals. They are passionate and big hearted enough to take success and failure gracefully.
What are your personal strengths as a leader?
I think I have an open heart to accept criticism as I am always up for trying and promoting something new in the industry. I have the patience to trust in the process and believe in the product I am serving in the industry.
What is the toughest lesson you learned?
Your work and dedication to the business can always be seen as having another motive or intention. It is best to always stay focused and move forward without being disturbed by others’ comments.
And the most rewarding?
For me, it is to see the smiles from my team when they are having a good day and bare fruits from their efforts – and to share the same vision and thoughts with like-minded people in the industry.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring leader?
Always be open to different possibilities in life. There are many ways and roads for you to reach your goal, keep trying and you will find what you are looking for. Stick to your beliefs and keep trying all the ways you can to achieve your goals.
Why should people be positive about the future?
Positivity is the key element that drives everyone to live a better life, to keep dreaming and believe in themselves. It’s the light within us that burns and makes us who we are!
