What was revealed on the Conscious Chatter Podcast

Diana Verde Nieto recently met with Kestrel from the Conscious Chatter Podcast to discuss sustainability, the Butterfly Mark and all about Positive Luxury. In the interview, Diana reveals what inspired her to build the Positive Luxury community. She unfolds the power of the “trickle-down-effect” and how luxury fashion can be a driving force to shift the industry at large.

There has almost never been a time when our future was so uncertain. Attitudes are shifting and the environmental issue is seemingly reaching a mainstream and cross-generational awareness, but there is still work to do. And while we undeniably all have a part to play in creating a better world, companies need to lead the way and put sustainability at the core of everything they do. Transparency in business practices is becoming a matter of the utmost importance; this is where the Butterfly Mark comes in.

Diana explained what the assessment process looks like for brands to receive the Butterfly Mark. The assessment process is designed as a thorough examination of a brand commitment to sustainability in five key areas: Governance, Innovation, Social Performance Framework, Environmental Performance Framework and Community Investment.

“SUSTAINABILITY FOR A LONG TIME HAS BEEN SOMETHING THAT RUNS VERTICALLY ON THE BUSINESS, SO LIKE THE CSR DEPARTMENT OR THE SUSTAINABILITY DEPARTMENT. REALLY, IT SHOULD RIDE DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE BUSINESS, SO EVERY PART OF THE BUSINESS SHOULD INCORPORATE THE PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, IN TERMS OF HOW IT OPERATES.”
DIANA VERDE NIETO , COFOUNDER OF POSITIVE LUXURY

Brands must go beyond achieving a minimum sustainable standard which is compliant with local law, international law and best practice principles. The process is updated every two years in partnership with the experienced sustainability council, as well as external institutional partners, companies, NGO’s and retailers. Interestingly, Harlem Brundtland, who served as the Prime Minister of Norway, coined the term sustainable development back in the 1980s, as “meeting the needs of today, without compromising the needs of future generations.”
