MATERIAL DRIVERS: ETHICS & FAIR OPERATING PRACTICES, WASTE, AND HAZARDOUS MATERIALS.
THE CHALLENGE
As a female-owned, female-led fashion business, Coco de Mer is committed to shining a light on the power and importance of female pleasure while creating conscious luxury. It faced the challenge of fully embedding sustainability into its operations and championing women – ensuring that its products are not only beautiful, but also ethically made and environmentally responsible. To reduce its environmental impact and improve transparency, Coco de Mer needed to better understand its supply chain.
CONSIDERATIONS
Operating in often complex supply chains, luxury fashion brands must balance environmental and social impacts, transparency with their business targets – within a complex and evolving sustainability landscape. Achieving progress requires ongoing collaboration with partners and clear communication of standards. Coco de Mer required support to navigate the complexities of its supplier relationships and evolving stakeholder expectations, while maintaining the core values of inclusivity and empowerment.
APPROACH & ACTIONS
With Positive Luxury’s guidance, Coco de Mer implemented a range of initiatives to set new standards within the business:
Circulated a supplier Code of Conduct to all their suppliers, ensuring ethical sourcing, transparency and environmental requirements are met
Implemented a Hazardous Materials & Workplace Safety policy enabling the brand to identify, manage and mitigate risks associated with hazardous substances across its operations and supply chain
Implemented a Waste Management policy to improve the performance and management of waste, providing training courses to employees to promote waste prevention and setting targets, including reducing waste production by 50% by 2030 and reaching zero waste to landfill by 2050
RESULT
By working with Positive Luxury, Coco de Mer has implemented robust standards across procurement, waste and hazardous materials. The brand improved supplier transparency and set ambitious waste reduction targets. Through clear policies and supplier engagement, Coco de Mer is now equipped to manage and mitigate operational risks. These efforts have delivered measurable performance improvements in Positive Luxury’s ESG+ assessment – hazardous materials up 24%, waste management up 13%, and ethics and fair operating practices up 14%. As a result, the brand has strengthened its foundation for long-term sustainability and reinforced its reputation as a responsible luxury business.
