Dr.Lipp faced the challenge of launching and scaling a 100% natural, multi-use skincare product in a highly competitive UK beauty market dominated by synthetic and single-use products. To differentiate itself by maintaining strict ingredient transparency, ensuring product efficacy with minimal formulations, and meeting rising consumer demand for sustainability, Dr.Lipp had to navigate the complexities of sourcing natural ingredients, maintaining product safety and stability, and understanding its impact on biodiversity.
CONSIDERATIONS
As a clean beauty business that prides itself on no more than 10 ingredients, Dr.Lipp faces the challenge of balancing product performance with consumer expectations while also ensuring that more sustainable choices do not compromise the quality or usability of its products. Dr.Lipp prioritised the environmental impact of ingredients and packaging, and the importance of supporting biodiversity to set new standards in its operations.
APPROACH & ACTIONS
With Positive Luxury’s guidance, Dr.Lipp:
Evaluated the entire product lifecycle from ingredient sourcing to end-of-life disposal, ensuring alignment with the brand ethos of ‘stripped back skincare’
Created an environmental management policy allowing Dr.Lipp to identify, measure, monitor, manage and set reduction targets in their scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, waste, water, waste, and biodiversity.
Conducted an analysis on its biodiversity impact to identify practices to be implemented to reduce the brand’s supply chain impact on biodiversity.
Implemented an animal welfare policy to create company-wide visibility, which details the brand’s animal-derived products and states that the brand will continue to support no animal testing.
RESULT
By working with Positive Luxury, Dr.Lipp implemented sustainability initiatives that have set new benchmarks across the business. The creation of an environmental management system enabled Dr.Lipp to systematically measure its emissions and biodiversity impacts. This led to a 30% reduction in the brand’s carbon footprint since its carbon assessment in 2021, and the introduction of packaging initiatives contributed to waste reduction. These actions saw a 79% increase in Dr.Lipp’s climate performance. Additionally, the implementation of a detailed animal welfare policy saw a 70% increase in its animal welfare score in Positive Luxury’s rigorous ESG+ assessment.
