BALANCING SUSTAINABILITY AND LUXURY AESTHETICS IN PACKAGING
PILLARS: ENVIRONMENT
MATERIAL DRIVERS: PACKAGING
THE CHALLENGE
The luxury packaging production process and end-of-life disposal represent significant environmental impact. Fragrance brands are under increasing pressure to adopt innovative materials whilst maintaining a luxury look and feel, however intricate designs and materials are typically non-recyclable or resource intensive in production. Striking a balance between sustainability and luxury aesthetics is a key challenge.
CONSIDERATIONS
When addressing the environmental impact of packaging, an upstream and downstream evaluation must be undertaken. Within the fragrance industry some of the unique challenges are the need for robust secondary packaging to protect the fragile glass bottles, balancing a luxury look and feel with overall material volume reduction as well as he consumer behaviour at the end-of-life.
APPROACH & ACTIONS
Positive Luxury advised ROJA to conduct a thorough packaging audit, identifying ways to reduce waste, increase the use of post-consumer recycled materials and ensure recyclability
ROJA leveraged insights and best practices from the Positive Luxury Real Changemaker community to inspire new packaging designs
Positive Luxury provided expertise on recyclable and sustainable materials options, sharing guidance on industry trends and offering support to explore creative ways to enhance sustainability while maintaining quality and elegance that defines their brand
RESULT
ROJA reduced product sample waste by 80% and reduced plastic usage in transit packaging by 67%. All packaging material is now either recycled or recyclable and 30% of glass used in ROJA’s products are post-consumer recycled.
