To celebrate Earth Day 2024, Positive Luxury partnered with Cult Mia to bring their Cult Eco values to life through an exclusive edit. The collaboration saw three Butterfly Mark certified fashion brands – join the cult. As Real Changemakers, each brand is meeting the highest standards of environmental sustainability practices, whilst offering see-and-be-seen pieces that don’t compromise on quality. We sat down with luxury handbag innovators Piper & Skye to explore this remarkable collaboration further – and find out why they’re excited about new regulation and the language of sustainability.

Why did you want to be part of this Cult Mia x Positive Luxury collaboration?
Like Piper & Skye, Cult Mia is a fellow Butterfly Mark certified brand. We love and admire that Cult Mia and Piper & Skye are aligned on core sustainability values. Cult Mia offers a uniquely curated selection of beautiful, high fashion pieces and we’re deeply honoured to be among their selected brands in the Cult Eco edit!
Can you tell us about the products in the selection? How do they align with Cult Eco?
The Cult Eco edit includes a wide selection of Piper & Skye’s signature pirarucu fish leather handbags as well as our responsibly sourced raffia and American wild alligator bags. The edit includes classic styles from Piper & Skye’s everyday Lola crossbody to the Macpack, to must-have summer styles like the Rio Raffia beach bag and Delray Tote. Piper & Skye’s signature pirarucu handbags utilise formerly discarded fish skins, transforming them into renewable materials which form the core of Piper & Skye’s collections. According to our carbon footprint case study, Pirarucu leather produces 12 times less emissions than traditional bovine leather. Sourced through more sustainable fishing management, pirarucu leather promotes a thriving species population and ecosystem, while also providing a source of income to the native surrounding communities in Brazil. The Pirarucu tanning process is free from harmful chrome, nanoparticles, synthetic dyes, artificial fragrances and heavy metals to guarantee environmental safety. All of the organic waste that is generated is recycled, promoting a circular system in the tanning process. Water used in the tanning process is subsequently collected, corrected for pH balance, and used as irrigation for reforestation farms. By utilising pirarucu bio leather, we are helping support the surrounding communities who depend on the fish as a food source. We are building a complete, more sustainable cycle in the industry by utilising fish skins which would otherwise be discarded as waste into river banks and into water systems, thus protecting the forests, wildlife, and people who depend on them.

What’s your favourite product in this edit and why?
Although each of our bags serves its unique purpose for both function and style, we all agree that the Lola crossbody is a timeless and classic handbag. It transitions from day to night effortlessly and has just the right amount of interior space. It’s a staple bag in all of our wardrobes and is very elegant.
What are you most excited about when it comes to the future of sustainable fashion?
We’re excited to see the progress being made when it comes to new regulations and standardised language. Sustainability is here to stay and something that will no longer be optional. Piper & Skye has also begun a new journey to track our company’s carbon footprint and establish a baseline. It’s exciting to see this becoming more accessible and widely understood.
What does it mean to you to be part of the Real Changemaker community?
We see this stamp of approval as setting Piper & Skye apart, and is an acknowledgement of the values Piper & Skye was built on: respect, responsibility and community. Our work doesn’t stop here. We look forward to how the Real Changemaker community will hold us to the high level of standards that are required to be granted the Butterfly Mark, but also challenge us to set the bar even higher. We believe we are stronger together – with the Real Changemakers support system, we are confident that we will reach new heights, growing the collective consciousness and furthering our common objectives for ethical and sustainable business practices.
