OUSHABA

Oushaba's mission is to breathe new life into forgotten materials. They combine repurposed e-waste with 100% recycled gold, silver and responsibly sourced gems to create unique pieces of jewellery. Their collections elevate recycled materials while championing and sustaining global artisanal crafts. They see opportunity for creativity, luxury, and exquisite craftsmanship where others see waste, reimagining and repurposing it into wearable art.

SUSTAINABILITY PURPOSE

"Seeing opportunity where others see waste” is core to the brand’s philosophy. The debut collection, ‘Connection Salvaged’ features repurposed e-waste housed in 100% recycled gold and silver. The gemstones used are responsibly sourced from trusted suppliers who are certified with the Responsible Jewellery Council, the world's leading standards setting body for jewellery. The brand’s jewellers source the e-waste from a local electronics repair shop close to the workshop. They only use pieces that cannot be repaired or are obsolete. Then, mobile phone circuit boards, charging cables, USB sticks and plugs are reimagined as rings, necklaces, earrings, cuffs and cufflinks, in unisex designs inspired by archaeological treasure. Any excess metal is swept up by the workshop and reused in future pieces. Every piece is housed in a bespoke box created from reclaimed timber, recycled fabric and cork. Honouring Oushaba’s commitment to sustainability, the plastic free and foam-free packaging is 100% recyclable and compostable, created using FSC certified materials and soy-based inks.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Oushaba

Oushaba exemplifies a pioneering approach to the circular economy, from setting a remarkable standard to create 100% recyclable finished products, to showcasing innovation through sourcing of materials. Their innovative use of e-waste from discarded mobile phones, incorporating elements like circuit boards, USB sticks, charging cables, and plugs, not only reduces electronic waste but also breathes new life into materials that would otherwise pollute the environment. Furthermore, Oushaba goes beyond the conventional by offering a repair and warranty service for their products. This initiative not only ensures customer satisfaction but also extends the lifespan of items and manages their end-of-life, ultimately keeping valuable materials in use for a longer duration.

PACKAGING EFFICIENCY

Oushaba

Oushaba’s dedication to packaging efficiency is evidenced through their exclusive sourcing of FSC certified and recyclable materials, as well as, entirely eliminating plastic from their packaging process. Each piece of jewellery comes in a bespoke upcycled wooden jewellery box, crafted from reclaimed timber. These boxes are not just aesthetically pleasing, they are also meticulously crafted for longevity and disassembly; the cork inserts for jewellery can be removed and the boxes can be repurposed. Oushaba’s Waste Management Policy also outlines clear objectives and targets for suppliers, emphasising the importance of minimising packaging and adopting materials that have the least environmental impact. This thoughtful approach on packaging efficiency ensures that Oushaba’s packaging has a prolonged lifecycle and can be easily recycled or repurposed at the end of life.

A WORD FROM THE CO-FOUNDER

Our aim is to challenge people’s preconceived ideas about what is luxury versus waste. 80% of e-waste isn’t recycled properly and ends up as landfill; it’s one of the fastest growing environmental concerns of our time. We are constantly discovering that the ewaste components we salvage have their own special beauty. A contemporary take on the custom of objets trouvés in art jewellery, the collection challenges preconceived notions of preciousness, while providing a solution to the problem posed by electronic waste.

WHY POSITIVE LUXURY

At Oushaba, our commitment to ESG+ principles has been at the heart of our brand since day one. We chose to pursue Positive Luxury's certification as the Butterfly Mark is a globally respected trust mark for luxury brands and sustainability. The Butterfly Mark’s rigorous evaluation process not only validates our dedication to responsible practices but also aligns perfectly with our mission to breathe new life into forgotten materials.

WHERE NEXT?

Oushaba has aligned its goals with UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 (responsible production and consumption). All the gold and silver it uses are 100% recycled from e-waste or industrial waste. Its gemstones are responsibly sourced from verified, trusted suppliers. The company tracks its carbon emissions, water usage, and waste, and it monitors and records its greenhouse gas emissions. Reduction targets have been set across all these areas. Oushaba’s supplier code of conduct and selection criteria are designed to implement these principles throughout its supply chain. Additionally, the company does not adhere to the traditional biannual schedule of collections, which can encourage overproduction and overconsumption.
