JEWELLERY & WATCHES
MONICA VINADER
Founded in 2008, Monica Vinader is a global, award-winning leader in responsible jewellery worn with purpose. The brand established itself as a pioneer in supply chain transparency with Product Passport, an industry-first initiative allowing you to trace 70% of their entire product range across its supply chain – from initial sketch to final polish.
SUSTAINABILITY PURPOSE
Monica Vinader's commitment to sustainability focuses on three core pillars of Inspiring their Industry, Preserving the Planet and Protecting their People, through which they strive to promote responsible manufacturing, responsible consumption, and responsible leadership in everything they do. They've set ambitious targets relating to each pillar in order to tackle environmental and social issues, whilst ensuring they are aligned with globally accepted standards of sustainability best practice such as the UN SDGs and Global Compact, and industry-specific frameworks like the Responsible Jewellery Council’s Code of Practices and the Watch and Jewellery Initiative 2030.

REAL CHANGE IN ACTION

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING, OPERATIONS & TRACEABILITY

Responsible sourcing is a central pillar of Monica Vinader’s sustainability strategy. All of the brand’s Tier 1 (direct manufacturing) and Tier 2A (major component) suppliers have signed its Supplier Code of Conduct, aligning them with Monica Vinader’s high ethical and environmental standards. To ensure compliance, annual third-party audits are conducted by internationally recognised auditing firms such as Intertek, assessing areas including labour conditions, environmental management, and business ethics.
A significant development for Monica Vinader is their advancement of gemstone traceability. In 2024, the brand launched the Odyssey collection, featuring aquamarine that is fully traceable to the Zimbaqua mine in Zimbabwe. This was the brand’s first fully traceable gemstone collection, which was bolstered by enhanced due diligence including a bespoke third-party mining audit, created in partnership with audit firm, SCS.
Meanwhile, Monica Vinader’s blockchain-powered Product Passport programme has expanded significantly since its 2022 launch, and more than 70% of their collection is now fully traceable. Starting with just 50 products, their Product Passport now covers over 600 items, providing customers with detailed information about the origin of materials and the craftsmanship behind each piece.
Monica Vinader is a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).

PACKAGING & CIRCULARITY

Sustainable design is at the heart of Monica Vinader’s ethos. All jewellery is crafted from 100% recycled gold and sterling silver with full country of origin information for all materials, including gemstones and pearls. The brand’s diamond range is now 80% lab-grown diamonds, produced with 100% renewable energy, significantly improving diamond traceability and environmental footprint, and for the remaining diamonds, the brand is committed to sourcing conflict-free diamonds through suppliers who are participants in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
Each jewellery item is made to last and backed by a five-year warranty, with a lifetime repair service offered beyond that to extend product life. The brand’s Jewellery Recycling Programme also allows customers to return old or unwanted jewellery, including from other brands, for responsible recycling, rewarding them with a voucher for their contribution.
In terms of packaging, Monica Vinader has achieved 100% FSC certification across its paper-based consumer packaging, which is fully recyclable. Their jewellery pouches are reusable and made from partially recycled materials. A packaging reclamation scheme allows customers to return packaging for reuse or proper recycling. The brand has also taken decisive steps to eliminate unnecessary plastic: a comprehensive plastic audit resulted in a 90% reduction in single-use plastics across operations. These changes support the brand’s broader ambition to maintain a circular product lifecycle, reducing waste and encouraging conscious consumption.

PEOPLE & BUSINESS ETHICS

Monica Vinader fosters an inclusive and supportive workplace, underpinned by a progressive diversity and inclusion policy, robust parental and menopause leave provisions, and a structured employee appraisal programme. All team members are offered unconscious bias training, reinforcing a culture of equity and continuous learning. The company deepened its social impact through participation in a gender-responsive procurement pilot under the UN Women’s Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030. This initiative tracks and improves sourcing from women- and minority-owned suppliers.
Externally, Monica Vinader has continued its long-standing partnership with Women for Women International, sponsoring more than 450 women through year-long training and development programmes over the course of their 10-year partnership.

CLIMATE & NATURE

Monica Vinader has made great progress on carbon reduction, having set near-term SBTi targets for Scope 1 and 2 in 2023, the brand achieved ambition to switch all offices, stores and warehouses to 100% renewable energy in 2024. The company is now actively building a comprehensive Scope 3 emissions reduction strategy and progressing towards a Net Zero goal, aiming to verify their Net Zero targets with the SBTi during 2026. This is part of a broader decarbonisation strategy that integrates climate action into every aspect of operations.
Recognising the importance and interconnectedness of climate change and nature, Monica Vinader invested in their first comprehensive nature mapping project with the team at Positive Luxury in 2024. The project assessed the impact of the company’s sourcing and supply chain operations on nature and biodiversity. The project was aligned to the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework and showed key risks to biodiversity and the risk to the business based on dependencies on natural resources.
The brand’s commitment to environmental stewardship continues with Monica’s Meadow, a seven-hectare biodiversity restoration project next to its Holkham headquarters. Measuring success is through a bespoke metric based on the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs standards. In 2024, the mid-term review report evidenced a 100% increase from the baseline biodiversity measures taken and during the meadow’s first flowering year, all of the expected 41 wildflower and plant species were identified.

A WORD FROM THE CEO
It’s an honour to receive the Butterfly Mark and a testament to years of running a business with integrity and close relationships with partners and customers. But, our scope of responsibility doesn’t stop here. This has been a personal journey for me and there is still much more to do.

WHY POSITIVE LUXURY
The Butterfly Mark assessment has allowed us to get an honest and realistic view of where we are on our sustainability journey, including what we’ve done well and what we need to improve on. We’ve embraced the concept of self-reflection and are realistic when setting our targets, and the assessment has enabled us to better understand how we can make the most meaningful impact here. Positive Luxury’s Butterfly Mark has given us the opportunity to enter a community of diverse but like-minded brands sharing knowledge and information, whilst the certification itself has provided a platform to communicate more widely with our stakeholders, from customers seeking reassurance that we’re operating responsibly, to suppliers and employees gaining comfort from their professional relationships.
