We kicked off our new webinar series, The Power Series, a month ago. Yesterday, our sixth episode, called The Power of Wellness, went live with an amazing panel of thought leaders. To discuss the impact both mental and physical wellbeing can have on your success, we welcomed mindfulness expert, Terrence the Teacher; osteopath Boniface Verney-Carron; and founder of Irene Forte Skincare and Wellness Director of Rocco Forte Hotels, Irene Forte.

The panel shared their thoughts on how best to take care of yourself to maximise your success, something you can achieve even in stressful or challenging times. As usual, the discussion was lead with questions from Positive Luxury CEO and co-founder, Diana Verde Nieto.

Diana began the conversation by asking the panellists to define wellness and how has the lockdown impacted our physiology? Boniface called on the World Health Organization’s definition, which combines physical, mental and social wellbeing. “This confinement is affecting all three areas,” he said. “The lack of movement and being sedentary, which we’ve been suffering from for the last 50 years. Life is defined by movement.” He explained that because your body is in motion, your heart is beating, lymphatic drainage, is happening, when this is slowed down and impaired, this leads to congestion. That trickles down into most of our organs and most of our function, causing things like constipation and even immunity. Boniface also discussed spiking cortisol levels and how poor posture can affect communication, and cause tension and pain.

Next, Diana asked Irene what makes a great self-care routine. “When starting a self-care routine, it’s important to think all aspects of wellness and wellbeing. Sleep is the most important, and eight hours of sleep is the key to good skin.” She also touched on healthy eating habits, as well as increasing your water intake. “Have a regular morning and evening skincare routine, but be ready to adapt that to your skin’s needs at the time,” she suggested. “A weekly bath with body brushing can help your skin and you to relax.”

Diana then asked Terrence how we can best look after our minds. “We have to understand that every thought affects your emotions and then affects you physiologically,” Terrence explained. “For every five to seven conscious thoughts, there are about 11 billion subconscious thoughts that go off on their own.” A physical response can occur from all the loss of control, uncertainty and fear that the majority of us are currently facing. “In mindfulness mediating, we learn that your thoughts don’t rule you, you can control this process. You can interrupt before the stress hormones get too high. Your perspective of reality will improve.” Then, Terrence lead a short meditation to help everyone reset their day.
