We kicked off our new webinar series, The Power Series, two weeks ago. Earlier today, our fourth episode, called The Power of Digital Communities, went live with an amazing panel of thought leaders. The panel included Misan Harriman, the founder and Editor-in-chief of What We Seee; Tom Adeyoola, tech entrepreneur; and Susan McPherson, the CEO of McPherson Strategies.
While the current crisis forces people to stay home, remaining connected digitally has never been more imperative to your business’s success. Our panel discussed how to effectively build a digital network that creates a sense of community, led by questions from Positive Luxury CEO, Diana Verde Nieto.
Diana began the conversation by asking the panellists what they feel the difference is between a social media-based community and an online one. “The way I like to think about it, for an online community, it’s a gathering of people with shared interests and shared goals,” said Tom. “For social media, you’re there by accident and it’s passive and it’s about wasting time. Whereas an online community has a greater purpose.”
Next up, Diana asked Misan how he built his online community through What We Seee. “I wanted to build a platform that was heavily curated,” he said. “We call our business a mindful media company. We don’t publish any content because we think it’s going to do well. We publish because our team likes it, and it moves them. That authenticity is the reason we grew to reach over 1.5 billion people in three years.”
Then, after discussing both the value and faults of Facebook, Susan shared her advice on creating an effective digital community. “I think it’s really about understanding who your audience is and figuring out what are the best means to stay in contact,” she said. “If it is brand authentic, I recommend that leaders actually over-communicate to both their external and internal audiences. But it has to be interesting meaningful connections, and leading with empathy and compassion. This is the time for that.”
