Mejuri is setting a new benchmark for accountability in the jewellery sector. The brand openly addresses key challenges in the industry – whether it’s questioning the efficacy of the Kimberley Process or clarifying what ‘recycled’ truly means in the context of precious metals. Through case studies, panel discussions, and industry conferences, Mejuri continuously fosters open dialogue and advocates for systemic change and greater transparency across the jewellery industry.
Pioneering Climate-Positive Gold
One of Mejuri’s most groundbreaking achievements in the past year has been the introduction of the first-ever mine-to-market climate-positive gold collection. Through its founding membership in Regeneration, Mejuri has brought fully traceable Salmon Gold™ to market – sourced from remediated mine sites in the Northern Yukon Territory, Canada, and Alaska, USA. This milestone proves that re-mining of tailings and mine waste is not only possible but can also contribute to environmental restoration.
Leadership That Drives Change
Sustainability at Mejuri extends far beyond its own operations. The brand’s VP of Sustainability & Social Impact plays a crucial role in shaping industry-wide progress, serving as a Board Member of the UN Global Compact Network Canada and an Advisory Board Member for Regeneration and Ethical Metalsmiths. This leadership ensures that Mejuri’s sustainability efforts are not just internal strategies but part of a broader movement toward systemic transformation.
Empowering Women in Gemstone Supply Chains
Mejuri is committed to addressing economic disparity in the gemstone supply chain, particularly in the Global South, where mining communities often see little financial benefit. Through its Empowerment Fund, Mejuri supports Design Thinking Africa (DTA), funding the establishment of a school and scholarships which enable women to receive the only precision cutting and polishing training in Zambia. This ensures that value-added work and the revenue it generates stays in the country rather than going abroad, helping to create greater economic opportunities within the communities that source these precious materials. Now, DTA is expanding its impact by partnering with a local vocational school to train even more people in advanced gemstone cutting and polishing.
A Commitment to Industry-Wide Progress
Further reinforcing its commitment to collaboration and industry advancement, Mejuri joined the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 in January 2024. This initiative unites leading brands in the pursuit of climate resilience, inclusivity, and responsible resource management. Membership comes with rigorous commitments, including setting science-based climate targets and conducting biodiversity assessments – demonstrating that Mejuri’s sustainability efforts extend beyond words to measurable, industry-leading action. In line with this, Mejuri submitted its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) targets in September 2024 and is currently in the validation process.
One year into its Butterfly Mark certification, Mejuri continues to illustrate that sustainability and luxury can go hand in hand.
