UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF CARBON EMISSIONS ON SUSTAINABLE SOURCING
PILLARS: Environment
MATERIAL DRIVERS: Climate, Sustainable Procurement, Circularity
THE CHALLENGE
Measuring and understanding carbon emissions is an integral part of developing a sustainable sourcing strategy. It aligns with a commitment to reducing environmental impact through selecting materials with lower carbon footprints and elements of circularity. A dedication to sourcing high quality and innovative materials which are lower-impact, recyclable and/or reusable is at the forefront of LK Bennett’s design team’s strategy. But how could they ensure they had a structured, measurable approach to guide their first steps and develop continued, positive actions in their sustainable sourcing?
CONSIDERATIONS
Conducting a carbon assessment – and navigating its results – can be a complex process, especially for a fashion brand’s supply chain. LK Bennett needed support taking the first step to reduce its carbon emissions across operations in line with a net-zero plan. Moreover, researching new raw materials and product development choices, to balance sustainable procurement within cost limitations, requires resources and strategic planning.
APPROACH & ACTIONS
Positive Luxury helped LK Bennett conduct its first carbon assessment of scope 1,2 and 3 emissions
Identified the link between business activities and carbon emission – then set reduction targets
We provided guidance and resources relating to responsible sourcing of natural fibres and how to explore innovative alternative fabrics
RESULT
Undertaking carbon assessment has allowed LK Bennett to set an absolute emissions reduction target of 37% by 2030. For material sourcing, it has engaged with new suppliers of sustainable leather alternatives and fabrics derived from citrus juice by-product.
