We kicked off our new webinar series, The Power Series, two weeks ago. Yesterday, our second episode, called The Power of Creativity, went live, with an amazing panel of thought leaders. Stephen Webster MBE, founder of his eponymous jewellery brand; George Smart, founder of full-service creative agency, Theobald Fox; and Bay Garnett, stylist, thrifting pioneer and Fashion Director at Large at ES Magazine.
The panel shared their thoughts and experience on the power of creativity, and how to use innovation and problem solving in adverse times, led by questions from Positive Luxury CEO, Diana Verde Nieto. Diana began by asking the panel what creativity means to them. “You need to add an element of originality to something,” said Stephen, discussing how he applies his own skillset as a jeweller to his unique designs. George added that he thinks creativity is “ultimately where what is accepted stops and you start to develop your own ideas.”
When asked about where their own creativity comes from, and where they feel people in general find creativity, Bay referenced the current circumstances. “People finally can actually stop, because the white noise has stopped,” she said. “When I speak to people who are always creative and busy, they’re having this real period of reflection.” The idea that this could be a period of reinvention as well, was posed, and George said “I think we need to challenge the sort of dominant structures that are relics of the industrial revolution. People need to not fall back to the same mechanisms.
The discussion then moved to the idea that organisations, like Extinction Rebellion, have been calling for drastic change for years, and things likely won’t be able to go back to normal after this. People are realising that we need more trust, and more creativity. “We’ve got to celebrate the fact that we are brilliant human beings,” said George.
