THE OURIKA GARDENS PROJECT
In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent discovered Morocco at the age of 33. The effect was so powerful, the designer had a sudden and strong intuition that this country would be his refuge. To him, Morocco was more than a travel destination–it became his creative retreat, a place that inspired his innovative ideas and bold use of colour.
Today the love story continues at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in the Ourika Valley, about thirty kilometres from Marrakesh.
YSL Beauty has embarked on an innovative project: creating its own gardens to grow some of their signature ingredients with a botanical research area that is a source of inspiration for beauty.
As well as guaranteeing the source of the ingredients it uses in its treatments and makeup, YSL Beauty has set up a women’s cooperative to tend daily to the garden. For two years, 33 women have been patiently tending remarkable gardens, a compendium of fragrances and gifts.
YSL Beauty is committed to empowering all women, whether through their products or from within their organisation. As with the Ourika Gardens, their mission is to give back to local communities in the most sustainable way that will have a lasting effect for generations. Since 2015, the community of women who attend to the Ourika Gardens has doubled its income thanks to their work in the gardens, and it keeps increasing as our gardens expand.
INGREDIENTS & SOURCING
The Ourika Gardens are also home to a botanical research area. This area is a source of inspiration for breakthrough skincare and makeup formulas. Here, YSL Beauty scientists identify the key benefits of their ingredients and look for ways to enhance and amplify their properties for the most potent and sustainable methods for their products. The Or Rouge Saffron distillate is a prime example of science-enhanced nature. With the research area, YSL Beauty is able to consistently improve and develop new formulas which then help expand the gardens’ botanical variety.
YSL Beauty has a pioneering vision of beauty and they keep that in mind at all stages in creating their products. While working on the innovative project of the Ourika Gardens, YSL Beauty is also building a committed and responsible sourcing model by lending the expertise of local communities to source authentic and sustainable ingredients such as the famous pistil of Saffron used in the premium Or Rouge range. Their sourcing model is firmly in line with sustainable development as they commit to reducing the environmental footprint of their products.
YSL Beauty believes that nature holds the key to the most powerful ingredients. To respect the environment, it selects these ingredients with the utmost care.
As the couture addict of today demands the most effective and cleanest of formulas, the formulations live up to this wish. Since 2018, even the fragrances have been re-created to reduce their environmental footprint.
Going even further, the new Or Rouge range comes in beautifully luxurious packaging, available with a refillable element.
