Our community on their plans for the summer

After spending months under lockdown due to the global pandemic, this summer will feel different to recent years. From traveling abroad, to relaxing at home, planning a staycation or reminiscing about memorable journeys, we asked our community how they plan to spend their Summer.

Natasha Robertson, Co-Founder of Lagom

Staycation in Switzerland, Ticino, River Verzasca. “I’ve taken two holidays this summer. The first was my first ever Club Med in Sicily with my two boys. Fun, fun, fun. The second, 4 stunning days on my doorstep! I visited the Italian (Itish according to my son) speaking part of Switzerland, Ticino, for a romantic getaway.  We stayed in Locarno on the shores of Lake Maggiore.  We sailed, we swam, had beautiful dinners in piazzas and discovered the aquamarine Verzasca River, pictured.  Both blissful travel experiences. Masks were required on public transport and all serving staff wore them everywhere but apart from that it felt gorgeous and normal. Covid-19 has been shocking but I feel a change of air, with the necessary precautions taken, can still be enormously rewarding.”

Monica Magdas Miller, Founder of Santicler

“Unfortunately, due to the second wave of the pandemic raging across the US, all summer plans have been cancelled. Instead, I will be spending the rest of the season at home working on the collection and doing a lot of outdoor activities. I am very fortunate to live in Venice Beach, steps from the sand, so I have the daily opportunity to walk by the ocean and enjoy the sunset. I remind myself every day how grateful I am that my family and I have a very nice home in a lovely place and we are all  healthy, safe and sound! Cannot really ask or wish for anything else.”

Almira Armstrong, Founder & Creative Director of Lumira

“During this time, I am enjoying being at home with family.  I travel so much for work, that it is nice to reconnect with the beauty in Sydney.  If I was to travel anywhere right now though, it would be Italy, especially around the Amalfi. This area holds so many special memories spent during family summer holidays. The beauty of the coastline, azure waters and citrus groves are perfect for a sun-soaked afternoon.  It has even inspired a new fragrance, Paradiso del Sole, which will launch in September this year. Stay tuned.”

Elisa Pantazopoulos, Founder of ELI-O

“I am currently in Greece visiting my family I couldn’t see for months due to lockdown. I am very close to my Greek roots. Greece is a huge source of inspiration for me and I always look forward to coming back with many new designs and ideas.”

Caroline Sciamma-Massenet, Founder of SKIIM

“This Summer, my husband, our children and I will take our time to visit our families in the South of France and Spain, since we couldn’t see them for six months due to the current circumstances. We try to minimise the travel, so we will spend the rest of the summer in our holiday home in Tuscany. This is my sanctuary that I go to with friends and family to relax, clear my mind, find inspiration and do my sketches.”

Livia Manca di Villahermosa, Founder, and Director of Balance Holidays

“Delicious food and wine, perfect weather and a warm-welcoming disposition, Italy is a unique destination, heavily sought after during the summer months, attracting flocks of tourists each year. However, with unprecedented circumstances hampering tourism across Italy right now and being Italian myself, I will be taking advantage of the thin crowds and hushed ambience to dig deeper into the natural wonders of my local surroundings. Reclaiming a sense of space and authenticity, exploring and supporting local businesses, satisfying the senses and most importantly, enjoying a quiet moment to refresh and reflect.”

Eva Alexandridis, Co-Founder of 111SKIN

“Time over lockdown has meant that we as a family have craved and appreciated the time we have spent together and whilst we have been able to speak to our parents, the boys grandparents, we have missed the quality time spent together. Each year, for the past 20 years, we travel to Mykonos to visit Yannis’ parents. Each year we fall in love with the comfort, reassurance and beauty of the island as we immerse ourselves in a relaxing family trip. Often joined by my parents also, we enjoy basking in our roots, exploring the island and making long lasting memories.”

John Rogers, General Manager of LUX* North Male Atoll Resort & Villas

“I’m lucky to be based in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations so being at home feels like a vacation. This summer, I’ll be staying on the island as the hotel has just reopened. The one island, one resort concept in the Maldives would probably make this a safer option. I’ll be taking this opportune moment to rediscover my surroundings, visit neighbouring islands and perhaps a dive or two to explore underwater.”

Jane Bell, Co-Founder of Godavari Diamonds

“Being located in the South Pacific, this is when the weather turns cold and we escape to one of the many beautiful Pacific islands. However, this year we visited Rotorua, located in Aotearoa’s North Island. We enjoyed the natural thermal hot pools while reconnecting with nature. This reminded me of a favourite story of mine, of the beautiful Hinemoa who swam to the island in Lake Rotorua to visit her true, yet forbidden love, Tutānekai.”

Tanith Swinford, Creative Director of Jota-Kena

Normally we’d be spending summer with friends in Europe or the US. However due to us being in South Africa for lockdown, and with the country’s borders still closed for international travel, we are making the most of our beautiful surroundings and enjoying some winter weekends away in the Western Cape. From secluded beaches to expansive mountain ranges, we’ve found nature to be particularly refreshing at this time.”

Sara Prentice, Creative Director at Garrard

“I’m very lucky to live close to the North Downs, so this year, I’ll be taking some time away from work to enjoy the peace and tranquillity on my doorstep. The simplistic beauty of the natural world has influenced many of the jewellery collections I have created over the course of my career, and I’m looking forward to returning to work full of ideas and inspiration.”

Bav Tailor, Founder of BAV TAiLOR

“This ‘Great Pause’ has indeed provided me with time to spend with my loved ones and self care. The abundance of Life is living in the present moment, especially as we have all learnt how unpredictable the future can be. Therefore, this summer I will for sure be taking the time to relish our sphere’s natural gems which are closer to home commencing with the enchanted Côte d’Azur.”

The Team at IOTA Project

“IOTA’s journey began with an 800 km trek called the Camino de Santiago between France and Spain. Tal, IOTA’s CEO, learnt to knit just before embarking on the trail and took a crochet hook and thread with her on the journey. Everything she saw looked like knitted elements. Ever since our inspiration comes from observing nature up close and from a distance wherever we may be, at home or abroad.”
