Rain Newton-Smith is the Chief Economist at the CBI, or the Confederation of British Industry. At the CBI, Rain and her team work to formulate advice for business leaders on the economic outlook in the UK as well as global risks. She is a leader in laying out the business perspective on economic policy for senior politicians and policymakers. In light of her knowledge in these areas, Rain was in conversation with Positive Luxury for our latest webinar, in partnership with What We Seee, Country & Town House, Adoreum and the Responsible Jewellery Council.
Called “How businesses can plan for success,” the webinar focused on navigating through the pandemic, and what to expect when emerging from it. As we look forward to the end of the lockdown in the UK, businesses must begin preparing for the different world they’ll be entering. Rain discussed this and answered questions from viewers throughout the webinar.
Before working at the CBI, Rain was head of Emerging Markets at Oxford Economics, where she was the lead expert on China. She also worked on the international forecast for the Monetary Policy Committee at the Bank of England, where she led the team responsible for developing a risk assessment framework for the UK financial system. While working at the Bank of England, Rain also advised the UK executive director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C.
Among all her incredible professional experiences, Rain was honoured by the World Economic Forum in 2012 as a Young Global Leader. She is currently co-Chair of the Young Global Leaders Taskforce on the Circular Economy. In 2016, Rain was listed in City AM’s Power 100 women. She is also a Visiting Fellow at King’s College, London and she is on the Council of the Royal Economic Society.
