Seven sustainable ski holidays to take this winter

One of the best ways to enjoy the colder months is to embrace the wintery weather. Heading somewhere with fresh air, mountains, and snow can be the perfect way to do that. Luckily, as more and more ski resorts realise their ability to have a positive impact within the environments they rely on, there are lots of excellent options for sustainable ski holidays. Read on for our top five picks.

Werfenweng, Austria

Werfenweng is located at the foot of the majestic peaks of the Tennengebirge, and it offers a variety of unforgettable holiday moments through lots of activities. This environmentally-friendly destination allows you to spend your holiday the most sustainable way through an initiative called the Samo Card. For a small fee, this card gives you access to things like e-bikes to explore the trails of Werfenweng and electric cars to visit the village.

Verbier or Zermatt, Switzerland

Lagom earned its Butterfly Mark by offering a platform that allows consumers to make sustainable choices when booking their next holiday. They offer a variety of beautiful and sustainable accommodations in both Verbier and Zermatt, and empower consumers to make choices about things like changing linens and replenishing amenities. Through offering those choices, Lagom hopes to create a new level of awareness amongst travellers.

Hakuba, Japan

This resort launched its own initiatives to combat climate change as they believe that all winter sport sites should take action. Some of these include collecting used cooking oil from the ski resort restaurants to turn it into biodiesel fuel, composting organic waste, forest conservation and more efficient use of energy, amongst many other initiatives. Making the village fully sustainable is their number one long term goal.

Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Known as the Pearl of the Alps, the Saas-Fee village and ski resort was awarded Energy Town status by EnergieSchweiz thanks to its efforts to improve quality of life within the community and protect the climate. In 2016, they introduced electric buses to allow skiers to get to the slopes in an easy and sustainable way. Through investment and positive actions, the resort is also on the way of becoming the first fine dust-free community in the European Alps.

Residence L’Amara, France

If you are looking for a sustainable ski holiday in France, consider Residence L’Amaria, located in Avoriaz. The Residence was awarded the Clef Verte certification to recognise its environmentally-friendly holiday accommodations. The luxury hotel has many different apartments all demonstrating positive actions with environmental policy, customer awareness, water, waste, and energy management.

Aspen, USA

Most of us have heard about Aspen and its amazing slopes and resorts, but the popular destination is also known as leading the climate change fight in North America. They are working to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by this year, collaborating with Protect Our Winters to reach this goal. In 2016, the ski resort won the Golden Eagle Award for its actions on climate change.

Morzine and Les Carroz, France

Skiology offers chalet bookings for perfect sustainable ski holidays in Morzine and Les Carroz. Conscious about the environmental impact of travellers and climate change, they partner with charities, train their teams to be more conscious and continue to set more goals. They are currently on a journey to reduce 30% of their packaging through menu optimisation, increasing the use of washable and reusable cloths for cleaning and switching their energy supplier to a cleaner one.
