We kicked off our new webinar series, The Power Series, in March. Yesterday, our episode called The Power of Speaking Up, went live with an exceptional panel and conversation.
In this episode of The Power Series, our panel including founder & editor-in-chief of What We Seee, Misan Harriman; founder & CEO of McPherson Strategies, Susan McPherson; feminist activist, writer, and speaker, Jamia Wilson will discuss the importance of speaking up and what actions we can take on a societal level to achieve equality.
Our panel share their thoughts in an open-discussion moderated by Luxury Editor of 1843 Magazine/The Economist, Melanie Grant and; Co-founder & CEO of Positive Luxury, Diana Verde Nieto.
Melanie Grant started by asking Jamia Wilson why are these protests important now and what they mean?
“I feel that the globals uprising that we are seeing right now are showing us that we are at the precipice of tipping point – a transformation.” Jamia replied “People are saying enough. They are coming together and creating collusions and realising that in a world where black lives matter, everyone matters.”
Melanie followed by asking Jamia what kind of change she would you like to see and what were her hopes for the future.
“I hope that – especially in the US although I know this is a global issue – I want to see in this country people coming together. Increase support for ensure that everyone can vote peacefully. For each of us to stretch ourselves more – what is it that we have to unlearn to do better?” Jamia added.
The conversation then moved to Susan, where Melanie asked about how can companies create more equality in the workplace and in practical steps, what can they do?
“We are seeing corporate America step up in greater ways that we ever had before.” Susan said. “As from today, 1.63 billion dollars has been donated by Corporate America but that is just the start.” Susan added. “The steps that companies have to take first and foremost is recognise the mistakes and the errors and the miscalculation they have made.”
Melanie then followed by asking Missan about how we can turn anger from the situation into agressive actions and if he thought that people were scared to speak up.
“They were scared. And fear usually comes from a place feeling you are alone.” Missan started “Because of something called the internet, that is over.”
“I think its empowered both white and black people who have some kind of moral compass, of empathy to think that’s just wrong, I’m done with this” Missan added. “People that are anti-racist know that there are enough of them to make it happen, and that is a unique situation happening in our time.”
Mélanie then jumped into answering general questions from the public, allowing our panel to answer questions from why we should join the conversation in the street to
Diana Verde Nieto then ended the panel discussion by opening the Q&A discussion with questions from the public.
