Technology is such a huge part of our lives. And while it improves our day-to-day in countless ways, there are some downsides to always having screens in front of our faces. Besides detracting from social interactions and adding to stress, dermatologists are now investigating whether the light that screens emit could be contributing to skin’s premature ageing.
The kind of light that’s caught the attention of those dermatologists is blue light. It’s short-wavelength, visible light that’s emitted from the sun, artificial indoor lighting, and of course, our tech screens. While it does regulate our circadian rhythms, which help us fall asleep, and it can also elevate our mood, there is evidence that it accelerates photo-ageing. That means more fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, and less firmness. While there’s still lots to do when it comes to researching this damage, there is evidence that visible light, including blue light, can penetrate the skin and affect it, particularly if you’re constantly holding your mobile right up to your face.
You can purchase blue light-minimising screen covers for your devices, and you can try to limit your daily screen time. But the best defence is making sure your skincare hast the ingredients. Suncream is so important when it comes to protecting your skin from UVA and UVB rays, but you’ll need to layer something else overtop of your suncream to fend off that blue light. Fortunately, our favourite clean, sustainable skincare brands are here to help.
Grown Alchemist’s Detox Hydra-Mist+ is an anti-pollution mist that not only adds hydration, it protects the skin from that dreaded blue light. The Mist’s hero ingredient is Anti-Blue Light Complex formulated with Buddleia Extract, a powerful plant-based antioxidant that fends off hyperpigmentation. Along with that, a plant-derived peptide in the Mist helps with cellular turnover, minimising the visibility of wrinkles and increasing skin’s elasticity.
The Pollution Defence Booster from 111SKIN is a “holistic pollution solution,” ready to protect your skin from all kinds of environmental aggressors, including blue light. The skincare brand’s Energinius organically-certified blend is derived from Indian Ginseng roots and it contains both botanicals and amino acids that help protect the skin from blue light. The Booster also includes 111SKIN’s signature NAC Y2 fusion to brighten skin and promote collagen production.
If you want to combine your UVA and UVB protection with your visible light protection, Sepai‘s City Shield is a great option. Its “protective armour” includes Cell-Protect, a structural promoter for the skin. The natural peptide compound fights against aggression from oxidative threats like pollution and physical stress, and maintains the metabolic activities of the cells that are exposed to that aggression.
Combining the right skincare products with limiting your screen time will help diminish the harmful effects of blue light, and keep the visible signs of ageing it can cause at bay.
