THIS WEEKEND, TAKE PART IN LONDON’S CAR FREE DAY

In an effort reduce the amount of traffic in the city, London Car Free Day is happening on Sunday. It’s no secret that London’s air is particularly polluted, and September 22 will mark mayor Sadiq Khan’s latest initiative to reduce that pollution. It will also be the biggest car-free initiative in the city’s history.

Most of the City of London will have limited vehicle access, including the area between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. Eighteen of the city’s boroughs are participating, too, collectively hosting more than 340 live plays in the street as part of Play Streets. Bank Junction will also become a festival space, hosting the Reimagine even between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Anyone trying to move around London on Sunday will be encouraged to take public transit, walk or cycle. To promote cycling, Santander Cycles is offering free cycle hires for 24 hours with the code CarFreeDay2019.

Through this one-day change, the hope is that London will host more car free days like this one and become safer and more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists. Doing that would also reduce the city’s emissions and lessen London’s contribution to pollution and climate change.

This is also part of a greater mission to position London as a global leader in transport and urban efficiency. Right now, the city does have a world-class transit system, but there is still room for improvement when it comes to sustainability in how it is growing. Car Free Day is a great step for the city to show leadership and support every borough and community to keep thinking about how to make their streets cleaner and safer for anyone not traveling in a car.
