Biotherm Water Lovers celebrates World Oceans Day with new commitments to minimise its impact on oceans in the years ahead.
On a trip to the French Pyrenees, Dr. Jos Jullien discovered in 1952 the incredible healing force of Life PlanktonTM in a fountain where Roman warriors would bathe after battle to heal their wounds. Ever since the inception of the brand, water has been part of Biotherm’s DNA. In 2012, Biotherm launched the Water Lovers initiative to raise awareness on water preservation and to minimise the brand’s impact on water and aquatic life. Since then, Biotherm has developed a range of sustainable products with an improved environmental footprint – from microbead-free formulas to recycled packaging. In 2019, in conjunction with the World Oceans Day, Biotherm announces its agenda to minimise its impact on oceans with 3 primary strategies:
Using more sustainable materials at all levels
Having already eliminated micro-beads and committed to producing all rinse- off products that are more than 90% bio-degradable since 2011, Biotherm pushes further its commitment to reduce its plastic footprint in the years to come. On one hand, Biotherm commits to eliminating all virgin PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate plastic) by 2020. The brand will also maximise its use of recycled plastic, ensuring that all products have a minimum of 50% recycled plastic and introduce bio-based packaging materials by 2023. Finally, a new benchmark is adopted for the worldwide skincare industry – a 100% non- fossil plastic packaging approach on all new launches starting in 2025.
The brand will equally adopt a more sustainable approach on the production of sales materials : starting from 2020, 100% of consumer gifts with purchase will be recycled and recyclable plastic and the uniforms for all Biotherm beauty advisors will be made from recycled materials. Biotherm’s pledge to eliminate plastic also applies to the retail stores design to achieve the target of 0 % fossil-based plastic approach by 2025.
Partnering with WWF China
Biotherm China will sponsor the “Plastic Debris Collection” program, organised by WWF and local partner Blue Ribbon. The one-year project will be launched in the Hainan Province this month and will involve setting up collection areas to remove plastic from beaches. The on-site collection team consists of Blue Ribbon staff and the local fishermen. Throughout the duration of the project, local fishermen will be encouraged to participate, increasing their income while also reminding them the importance of ocean conservation.
Raising awareness and innovation with research partners
Biotherm Water Lovers’ partnership with Tara Ocean Foundation aims at fostering greater understanding and building awareness in the areas of marine research.
Tara Ocean Foundation is a non-profit organisation that collaborates with scientific institutions to study the impact of climate and ecological change on the ocean. Tara Ocean Foundation sails a 36-meter aluminium schooner called Tara to travel the world and collect ocean data. The boat has completed 11 expeditions, providing scientists with the information they need to predict and anticipate the impact of climate change. Their research also help Biotherm to understand how to minimise the product impact on the ocean waters.
In continuation of its commitment to the Earth’s water, Biotherm is also proud to work in partnership with Mission Blue since 2012, to protect “ Hope Spots ” – special places that are critical to the health of the ocean. A concept introduced by Dr Sylvia Earle, the founder of Mission Blue, which empowers individuals and communities to protect special places around the world that are critical to the health of the ocean. In announcing their exceptional new commitments, the partnership now seeks to address the ever- growing threat of plastic pollution, in order to save the world’s oceans.< Back
