Positive Luxury

Taunina

Taunina started as a dream to change lives for its founders, Karen and Tracey, who met at the London School of Economics. They were determined to make a difference in the world. Taunina – which means ‘lion’ and ‘no inome, no assets’ in African – was borne out of two beliefs: that age-old artistries around the world are art forms to be preserved, revitalised, and treasured; and that, while employment creation is of vital importance, nothing develops self-esteem quite like being recognised as creators of pieces that are cherished the world over.

Taunina employs gifted artists from disadvantaged communities around the world and affords them the opportunity to use their unique cultural heritage and artistry to create beautiful handmade, appliqued and embroidered collectable soft toys. The Taunina artists joined the company full-time in September 2011; each artist has her own signature stitches, style and motifs. They have a share in the profits generated by the business, giving those who were once without income and assets the opportunity to become lions of their own destiny.

Taunina is based in Cape Town, South Africa, with plans to expand its family of artists to Brazil and India in 2014.
