Kirigram
The Infinity Curl by Kirigram is a return to the basics of sculpture and follows a simple design principle: the creation of a three-dimensional object from a flat plane. Inspired originally by the Japanese art of Kirigami - the company’s namesake - the manufacturing process employs both industrial production techniques and traditional craftsmanship skills.
The simplicity of the design leads to a minimal waste product that is highly durable and fully recyclable. No by-products, no assembly and maximum life span.
Each table in the original ∞ Curl collection starts life as a flat sheet of steel, which is then laser-cut and 'drawn' into shape to make the final form. The table is then powder coated with the colour of your choice. This process also hardens the steel, adding rigidity, and softens the edges to make a smooth finish.
Like Kirigram’s tables, the newer Curl objects are inspired by the Kirigami technique. Every piece is produced from a single sheet of steel which is cut and then sculpted into a functional sculpture. The new objects are made from a thinner and more malleable steel sheet.
Kirigram tables can be seen at 2013’s Interiors UK event in Birmingham. They will also be attending 100% Design and Milan-based Salone Internazionale del Mobile in 2013.
