Green and Black's
Green & Black’s had ‘green’ beginnings which have always been central to the way they operate. All Green & Black’s products are certified as organic by The Soil Association and this includes checking that ingredients are grown in environmentally sustainable ways. They also have a commitment to protecting and nurturing the rainforests, and since 2003, have planted 1 million cocoa trees in Belize.
In their London offices every effort is made to reduce carbon output, from renewable energy sources to recycling and energy-efficient water coolers. Video conferencing technology has been installed to reduce the need to travel. Green & Black’s also have plans to start manufacturing the products they sell in the USA actually in North America and Canada instead of Europe in order to reduce their carbon footprint.
In terms of packaging, 100% recycled board is used for Easter, with Forest Stewardship Council accredited boards used for their gift range. The paper they use is 100% recyclable, water-based inks are used wherever possible as well as 100% recyclable foil.
In 1994 Green and Black’s Maya Gold bar was the first product to be awarded the Fairtrade mark by the Fairtrade Foundation UK. It is made with organically grown cocoa and was inspired by the traditional Mayan drink of cocoa and spice from Belize.
