Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen was founded in 1992. In less than 10 years, McQueen became one of the most respected fashion designers in the world. In December 2000, 51% of Alexander McQueen was acquired by the Gucci Group, where he remained as creative director. Collections include women’s ready-to-wear, men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, eyewear and fragrance.
Following Alexander McQueen’s tragic death in February of 2010, Sarah Burton – his right-hand woman – was announced as creative director in May. In the same year, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, chose McQueen for her wedding dress.
Alexander McQueen has won numerous awards including British Designer of the year 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003; International Designer of the Year by The Council of Fashion Designer's of America (CFDA) in 2003; A Most Excellent Commander of The British Empire (CBE) by her Majesty the Queen in 2003; and GQ Menswear Designer of the Year in 2007.
Alexander McQueen is part of the PPR group who are setting new standards in sustainability and business practice in the luxury, sports, lifestyle and retail sectors. PPR requires a knowledge of their suppliers environmental and social practices and comply with global labour standards, as well as paying minimum or living wage. They take steps to reduce greenhouse gases, water usage and waste as well as monitoring toxic chemicals. Social and environmental factors are considered during the design process, packaging is mainly recyclable and they aim to protect and support communities in the areas that their companies operate in.
